Newspaper

If you buy a week’s worth of newspapers for all of your items, you end up spending no more than $7.00 in most states. You can wrap items in the paper, then use any leftover as packing material.

The newspaper is thick enough to give protection and durable enough to provide a cushion for even the most delicate items. It is a cheap, tough package choice for any budget conscious mover to pick

Blankets

Old blankets don’t have to be thrown out. Instead, use them as packaging. For items that may scratch easily, such as glassware or fine china, you can surround them with a blanket.

Use any extra amount of blanketing to pad the box, giving the item a secure lock into place. Blankets also allowed for a little movement, which better prevents fracturing compared to rigid packaging.

Toilet paper rolls

Have extra cardboard rolls from toilet paper leftover? These rolls have a firm shape that will hold through even in the most turbulent of moves.

Also, toilet paper rolls make great cord and wire holders. If you are packaging wires and want a cleaner solution than just sticking them inside of storage, wrap them up and store those supplies in toilet paper rolls. This creates a tidy solution that will result in easy unpacking.

Egg cartons

If you are transporting jewelry, die, or assorted small items, egg cartons are an excellent solution. Each small section creates a perfect encapsulation for whatever you need. With indentations, the small parts have limited risk of mixing with each other.

Cutting an egg carton apart can also support odd shaped items. If you have any products that don’t conform to a box shape like a vase or other trinket, you can support the item horizontally with egg carton. That way, the item will not roll, but will be safely contained.

Rice

A 20-pound bag of rice can cost less than $10. Rice is a malleable, affordable, rigid packaging that you can pick for smaller items that need dense storage.

The trade-off is the weight. While rice can give you a lot of security, a lot of rice can get very heavy. However, for small items that have to be safe from rolling around, fill their box with rice.

Spanish moss

Spanish moss is a real plant that you can use to store items inside boxes. It is soft, but firm, providing a wonderfully elegant solution to environmentally conscious movers.

A bonus with Spanish moss is that, after you’re done, you can plant it in your new yard and watch it grow. It’s completely safe and healthy for you and the planet.

Smaller boxes

You can take the nesting doll approach and use smaller boxes with items inside as support. If you’ve run out of package materials, but need to fill a container, fill any space with smaller boxes. This locks your items into place and also reduces the amount of moving you might have to do.

Bubble wrap and packing peanuts

Classic standard moving supplies. While they will require a bit of investment, they are the leaders in packaging material for a reason.

Bubble wrap can be wrapped around any item and provide a thick layer of extra protection. The material inside will not break before the bubble wrap does, providing extra security.

Packing peanuts are small, fluffy, and solid. You can place peanuts in any box to provide support for items that can’t move around. They also don’t weigh a ton, which gives you an advantage
